John P. Soule

White Mountain Scenery

White Mountain Views - John P. Soule was a pioneer photographer of the American landscape. An early focus of his camera concerns public places, tourist destinations, and the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Among his photographic contemporaries in the White Mountains were Franklin White of Lancaster, NH, Franklin B. Gage of Saint Johnsbury, VT, and J. W. Black of Boston, MA. Each catered to an audience interested in the Cartes-de-Visite album trade which was growing in popularity. As we look at the collective contributions of these photographers, we gain a better understanding of John P. Soule. Examples of their photographic work can be found in the collection of the New Hampshire Historical Society at Concord, NH.
